Giving back to the Community Through Education by Kyla - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I was a little girl education has always been everything to me. I’ve always been intrigued when it came to learning. As I grew older that love for education only grew. Around the age of ten I knew that I wanted to be a doctor. I knew I wanted to be a doctor because I enjoyed my sciences and learning about the body and I also love to help others. I've always had the opportunity and privilege to actually have an education. I know that everyone in the world doesn't have that opportunity and that’s why education is so important to me.
Through education I can change lives other than my own. All around the world there are children that do not have the opportunity to have an education or the education that they do have isn't the best. It’s always been my dream to go to a third world country and help the children there; but a goal for now is to start at home within my community. I want to give back to my community by Growing up in the inner city, I have learned the value of helping my community and giving back to those less fortunate. I've helped work soup kitchens, and worked with children at a summer camp but that never seemed sufficient enough.
My goal after I have settled in my career is to start a program in the inner city that will be open to anyone who wants to better themselves in their education and pursue their life goals. I would be able to use my expertise and education to help mold them into the profession they wish to pursue. In addition to my expertise, I would hire additional staff that specializes in other fields to help those that attend the program. This way, if we have a group of students who wish to be a construction worker and another group who wants to be a technician for NASA, they will be accommodated. These students will be well equipped and prepared for their future career goals.
Another way I would give back to my community is to set up a free day care program for careworn parents to bring their children so that they can attend school or work. I have witnessed too often parents who are working to provide for their children but are limited to what they can do because of lack of daycare service. This environment would be set up as a friendly, safe place where the children can learn and play while their parents focus on pursing their educational and career goals.
All in all, helping people is what makes me think and I truly believe that if I can give back to my community, I too can contribute to making dreams a reality. Once I am able to attest to helping people achieve their goals, I will then feel as if I fulfilled my duty to my community by furthering others education.
