Thankful for my education by Kyla - November 2020 Scholarship Essay

The aspect of my education that I am most thankful for is the opportunity to attend the most diverse Catholic high school in my state. My parents giving me this opportunity has truly been a blessing in several ways.

The first way is that I believe I had an advantage in learning over my friends who attended public school. I would hear them complain about teachers not having time for them, or not caring that they were failing. There class sizes are significantly larger than mine and they feel lost in the mix. I have the opposite experience, where I feel that each teacher has my best interest in mind. The make time to check in with me and are always accommodating to provide extra help.

The second way is the diversity aspect. I live in a predominantly white area and my elementary and middle school was all white students with a handful of minorities. My parents raised me that we do not judge a person on the color of their skin, their religious preference or where they live. But I was never challenged in that belief. My friends all lived in the same neighborhood as me, were all white and Catholic. When I began touring high schools one of the things that stood out the most to me was the diversity of the students and how friendly and inviting they were. When I began making friends I started to learn a lot about other cultures and beliefs. I believe having this opportunity to be in such a diverse setting has helped prepare me for the diversity of college.
