Important High School Curriculum Subject Idea by Kyerstan - August 2015 Scholarship Essay
If I was able to add any subject to the American High school curriculum it would be about the important things we need to know when living on our own. The subject would go into detail about things like taxes, bills, getting a house and a vehicle, and other topics that involve providing for ourselves. I think that this would be an important subject to learn because there is no other way for young adults who are about to be on their own to know these things. There are parents, but there are sometimes complications or that is not enough. These are things that everyone has to do and I think that it is important for young adults to know how to do them before we are actually on our own. I believe that if we were taught how to do them in school then when it came to actually doing them we would have a better understanding and it could help us make better decisions from the beginning. I think the subject should go into detail about making resumes for jobs and filling out applications. These things are important because they apply to everyone in today’s society.
As an adult doing taxes, applying for jobs, buying a car, buying a place to live and so much more are required. A subject that taught young adults how to do, what to do, and what not to do in these different situations could be very helpful. Some young adults do not even know what taxes are or how to make a resume. This class could give young adults information to build off of to help them start their lives providing for themselves. The information given in this class could help the young adults from making wrong choices or getting themselves in debt. They could know the benefits between renting, leasing, and buying. Going from a child/teen where many things are provided for you to where you are providing for yourself it can tend to get very overwhelming and I think a class like this could better prepare young adults to be on their own.
