Education is a tool that can level the field across diverse backgrounds. Nelson Mandela said that “education is
the most powerful weapon in which you can use to change the world.” An education can allow someone who previously did not have a voice a chance to change the world.
In my opinion, education enables someone to not only better themselves, but to better the lives of people around them. The purpose of an education is to create an opportunity for someone where one did not exist before. Often times, changes needed in the world are created by people who hold political, educational, or expert positions. Sometimes the changes that are needed and they people they will affect are not included into the equations to effect the change. If the people who have experienced areas that need change the most are able to obtain education, then they can later effect the changes that will happen from not only an educational perspective but also from a firsthand account perspective.
Another purpose of education is to allow someone to develop the techniques and skill necessary to be successful. It promotes critical thinking, group discussions, sharing of ideas, and most importantly it teaches you how to listen in a group and develop a plan using everyone’s input. The instructors in college prepare you for having a boss. They give assignments and deadlines without constant reminders much like the work place.
Education often tests a person’s character. It permits a person to test out boundaries of who they are within a relatively safe environment. It creates situations that often come up once they enter life beyond college in which they must make decision that could possibly be life altering.
Education helps mold a person into someone who contributes to society. The purpose of an education is to help themselves and others. While not having an education a person can still find these opportunities, the person with the education is in a better place of influence.
