I believe that my ideal form of assessment is by way of an essay. For all of my years in schooling I have always best expressed my understanding throughout writing. This has been through elementary school, middle school, and high school. In every history or literature class I was in, it always excited me to know that we were to be assigned to write out our thoughts instead of filling names into blanks on a test. An essay allows a student to be free in their creativity, to declare their beliefs concerning a certain subject without confinement. Except, for maybe a word count limit.

Writing strengthens abilities of the brain that a test may not - reflection, discernment, evaluation, supplication, and analysis. It develops an independent thinker, reducing the act of merely guessing. When an essay is apportioned, it is able to show the teacher or professor how much you understood the subject studied and the underlying themes of said matter. In addition to the abilities of the brain becoming fortified, essays also come in various formats: expository, persuasive, argumentative, and analytical. Writing in an expository form allows the author to explain differentiating angles of an idea, without really constructing a competition between said ideas. An expository essay is often unbiased and factual. The persuasive way of writing is an attempt to convince the listener or reader to take the author’s stance on a specific situation. For example, in my public speaking class during junior year I was instructed to make a persuasive outline. I chose to discuss the dangers of consuming aspartame in food and drinks. My goal was to persuade my audience to stop their possible consumption of aspartame in order to avoid the health problems that derive from it. A persuasive essay is similar to an argumentative essay. However, an argumentative essay is the author trying to prove that their opinion or belief is the only correct way, with no exception. They often contrast the differences between two matters and explain why one must be wrong. A student is able to develop their faith towards a topic. An analytical essay is an interpretation of a theme, in addition to depicting the meaning of a metaphor. This is often done with novels and poems. One may delve into a character and discover their reasoning of things by analyzing choices and actions.

In conclusion, through writing a numerous amount of essays all through my school years I have also discovered things concerning myself. I have an infatuation with analyzing the deeper, underlying issue. I care about explaining why something in the past, or something I am progressing towards in the future is important to me. My goal is that when someone has read a work I wrote, that they are drawn in from start to finish. Writing is a part of me, and millions of other people in this world. In light of this, I hope that the way of learning through essays is used in schools for the rest of time.
