College Students and Applying Knowledge by Kristen - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were to give a speech to college students it would be on the topic of presence of mind and application of acquired knowledge. Between five courses, a part time job, and personal life it is easy to go into autopilot instead of focusing on the purpose of what we are learning. Too often we go into a test memorizing exactly what we believe will be tested instead of understanding and internalizing on the actual information being offered to us. After graduation, when we become professionals, we will realize the importance of many of the topics we learned and wish we had taken the time to practice using it.
Although I am studying physical therapy, I wish I had paid more attention to the marketing class I took during my sophomore year. It took a back burner to my science classes and I hardly remember any of the content at all. At the time it was not a priority, but after a few years in the field of physical therapy, I aspire to open my own office. Having the skill set to market my company could potentially increase my case load, and therefore my paycheck.
Allowing time to practice, explain, and reflect on the information that we learn in class, or even in daily life, will help us grow into more well-rounded professionals in the future.
