We Need Leaders by Krista - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

Receiving the ability to change the curriculum of American schools would be utterly remarkable. With this opportunity, I would make sure that students’ lives would be changed, and also inspired. I would implement a course on leadership skills that would build young adults into astounding chiefs of their communities, schools, and even households. Students in today’s society are truly lagging in their leadership qualities as most tend to follow and not lead. This course would break students from that horrid habit and give them the confidence to bust out of their comfort zone and into the shoes of a leader.
Leadership is one of the most vital characteristics a person could possess. Knowing how to be a leader will help all students across America be successful in their educational and professional careers. As stated above, too many students are following the crowds instead of breaking free from bad influences. I see it every single day throughout my high school, students who think they are being “cool” because they hang out with a crowd of people and mimic what they do. I’m not sure when the new “cool” became to not be who you want to be, but I think that stereotype needs to be abandoned sooner rather than later. If this course were to be made a part of the curriculum, the key subject would not only be leadership, but also how being a leader can change lives of students around you, for the better.
As John Quincy Adams once remarked, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Is that not what we want for our world – more dreams, more innovation, more leaders? With this course in our curriculum students will learn the values of being a leader, being their own person, and most importantly influencing others to do the very same.
