Way Back When by Kortney - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

It’s hard to believe that 12 years ago I was just 6 years old! At that time I was figuring out what I was interested in, I was discovering new hobbies and making friends. However, my closest friend throughout my childhood was my dog, Shadow. Spending almost every day with him and taking care of him really helped me to realize how much I love animals and the passion I had for helping them! Therefore, ever since I could remember, I’ve wanted to be a Veterinarian.
From cats and dogs to snakes and lizards, I became intrigued with the idea of animals and their physical appearance. The zoo was my favorite place to go on the weekends to just admire all of the unique species of animals and their lifestyles; I found it interesting how the lives of animals were so different compared to ours. And at that point my dream began! All through elementary school I was set on being a veterinarian, nobody could tell me otherwise.
This dream of mine lasted a long time, up to when I was about 14 years old, enjoying my last few months of middle school. My dream ended when a tragedy struck my family and I the day after Thanksgiving. My best friend, and trusty companion, Shadow, had passed away, and it hit me hard. Losing the dog I’ve had for 12 years was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. However, this situation helped me realize that maybe I wasn’t really cut out for taking care of animals. What if I wasn’t strong enough to handle the consequences if something went wrong?
After months of research and going back in forth in my decision making, I came up with my final judgment. My doubts and hesitation steered me away from becoming a veterinarian, however my dream to help didn’t go away! Therefore, I have chosen to strive to become a physician’s assistant and specialize in obstetrics.
Becoming a physician’s assistant is my dream job, I aspire to educate and inform my patients on habits that will assure them a healthy pregnancy that will result in a healthy baby. It is clearly seen that a lot has changed way back when I was only 6 years old!
