Education Takes Things Further by Kiva - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
2x+4=0; Rome invaded England in 55 A.D; an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. These are just a few things we learn in school. Some people may wonder why. Why do we need to know this? What is the point? They believe that this knowledge is useless, that it will in no way benefit them. However, education is not without a purpose. It provides the means with which we are able to better both our society and ourselves.
Education is the foundation of our society. Without education, there would be no skilled workers. Without skilled workers, there would be no workforce. No workforce would mean the collapse of our economy and, ultimately, our society. You may argue that this is not true. Neither the Native Americans nor the ancient Greeks had schools. However, they were not uneducated. While each tribe's customs vary, it was common for each generation to teach the successive generation the skills necessary to survival. They were also taught the customs and history of the tribe. While theirs was not the same as our education system, the Native Americans were properly taught according their society. The ancient Greeks, also, were not uneducated. On the contrary, some Greeks were highly educated for their time. The wealthy often had tutors, and this was actually a time of great learning, producing scholars such as Plato, Aristotle, and Archimedes. These scholars are perfect examples of the purpose of education. Because they were all well-educated, they were able to contribute to society in many way, providing great advances in the fields of astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy, to name a few. They all utilized their education to further their society.
Education can be used not only to further our society, but also to further ourselves individually. In school, you learn a wide range of things. Sometimes students find themselves wondering why they have to learn so much. It's not as if you're going to actually use it, right? The reason our education today covers such a wide variety of subjects is to give everyone equal opportunities. If someone was only taught writing, they would begin to excel at it eventually. But what if they had a natural proficiency for mathematics? They would never know, because they have only been taught how to write well. Education gives everybody the opportunity to discover what they are good at and what they like to do. When students learn that they excel in a particular area of study, it gives them good feelings about themselves. They are proud of themselves and what they can accomplish. They then have a drive to learn even more about it, as much as they can, so as to develop their talents as much as possible. This allows them to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to help sustain and further their society.
Education is the key point to furthering our society and inspiring people to improve themselves and everything around them. Without education, our society would not be able to function. It depends on each generation learning not only what they are taught, but also using this information to advance their society. Education is not only for the advancement of society, but also for the building up of individuals. It provides the basis for which people can have equal opportunities to learn and develop themselves to the best of their ability. This then leads them to apply what they have learned to everything around them. It's a cycle: education builds up individuals, who then help advance society. And the more advanced our society is, the more there is to learn. All things considered, it's safe to say: education takes things further.
