Kimberly's Most Valuably Learned Lesson by Kimberly - November 2013 Scholarship Essay
I haven't been in high school for some years now. As I sit and think about what I learned it really reminded me just how long that has been. I remember learning about Math, Geography, History, even Drivers Education. Of all those classes I can't think of one thing that I learned from any of those lessons that I could use today.
I did learn, however, that life lessons begin in high school. This is where we really learn what is expected of us when we become adults. We learn how to treat each other with respect and dignity. We learn to appreciate those who are real friends and acknowledge those who are not. We start seeing the world as it actually is and not what our parents shelter us to know. Drugs, sex and alcohol is introduced along with peer pressure. Life isn't as straight forward as we thought it would be and we see we have more options to choose from. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to make the correct decisions all the time. So we hit snags along the way that hinder us from achieving the ultimate goal we focused on while in middle school. You know, when our parents made our decisions for us and we actually listened to them!
Why, you ask! I have three daughters that seem to be learning the same valuable lesson from their experience of high school. They are proving to me that the same life lessons are still being taught and that my experience with high school might come in handy to get them through it. They are showing me that they aren't learning anything that will help them in the future in the classrooms because the drama's of the hallways is much more important.
