More Than Just A Step To A Job by Kierra - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

When people list the steps to take in life in order to be successful, they often list having a quality education as one of the top ones. Education, they say, is necessary to obtain any job that is more enjoyable than minimum wage working. While it is true that education does allow a larger range of job opportunities, that is only one of the many reasons why education is profitable in the long run.

When asked why they value education, people oftentimes say because it could get them higher paying, better, more enjoyable jobs than are available to the uneducated. What they don’t often mention is the fact that a more educated populace will result in a better world for everyone. The more educated a person is, the more informed decisions they can make when they interact with society, such as when they vote or choose what to do with their time. Educated people are more likely to understand the deeper implications of their actions and how they could impact others; those who don’t understand how what they are doing is detrimental to themselves and others are going to continue doing it.

Education also allows for a better understanding of life in general. It doesn’t necessarily have to be textbook based; people are often educated through the actions of themselves and others and learn valuable lessons. Several people opt to go into a trade, thus being educated in some small aspect of society for a career that they wish to pursue. Some people observe nature and learn from it, or learn from living on a farm. Whatever the method, learning gives people more power over their lives.

In general education is important because it gives us power to fully understand situations and therefore be able to make better decisions. It also allows for better opportunities for fulfilling dreams because of the added experience that had making a more vied-for candidate in the job selection process. Even if it doesn’t seem the most entertaining of endeavors, it will be well-worth the work farther on down the road.
