I Have a Dream by kiely - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever walked into a classroom and felt relieved to be there? Your answer is most likely no, because as students today we tend to think of school as stressful and overwhelming. I know this is a very negative outlook on the situation. I do believe some people have occurrences where their teacher or professor has made the classroom environment more comfortable than others. My dream classroom would consist of a teacher who is enthusiastic about their subject, decorations and lighter colors in the classroom, and an organized teacher and classroom.
Enthusiastic, means to be intense with eager enjoyment and interest. Throughout my personal high school experience, I have had many teachers who do not seem to love the subject they are teaching. Some occurrences they would just breeze through assignments or act as though their job is more of a job than a career. My dream is to have someone who is interested and passionate about their subject. Psychologists have researched how students learn while in the classroom, one of them is the human mind gives back what it receives. Meaning if a teacher gives out monotone voice and non expressive actions, that they do not enjoy what they are talking about, then the students will give that same attitude and action back. I believe making the classroom a fun learning environment is key to building trust with students.
Imagine with me, you go into a classroom on your first day of school and the walls are empty, the teacher's desk is full of papers spread out everywhere, and there is trash and dirt on the floor. All of these can make someone feel anxious or uneasy because the room doesn't seem like it has a positive environment. Now you may be wondering, what does this have to do with learning? To answer that question, decorating the classroom with positive posters and lighter colors can make the room feel warm and inviting. Students would, instead of being anxious or uneasy, feel more comfortable and safe. I believe this is major key to having a good environment in the classroom and I feel as though this would increase the amount of student to teacher response.
Throughout middle and high school, one will hear teachers or advisors say that being organized can help you in the learning process. I fully agree with this, although I did not listen to this advise until my later years in high school. Being organized with the papers in a certain subject or cleaning out your book bag each month is a life saver when it comes to finding things you need. When going into an organized classroom it is beyond easier to understand and comprehend where to turn things in, where to put your book bags during a test, or even assigned seating. Personally I have had many occasions when my teacher was not organized and it left me feeling confused about the directions of a certain assignment. This situation has lead me to believe that organization in the classroom is another key quality for helping students excel in school.
My dream classroom would consist of an organized teacher and classroom, a teacher who enthusiastic about their subject, and decorations and lighter colors in the classroom. These are only a few examples, for there are many more that contribute to the learning benefits of each student. Now that I have explained what my dream classroom would consist of, I would love to say that enthusiasm, positivity, and organization are very good habits to start young, so when older these core habits come as second nature.
