I Plan To Affect Positive Change In My Community by Kevin - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

I feel that America has lost its competitiveness in science and technology and I would like to encourage others to seek this field. I plan to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering and make a positive impact on my community by starting a non-profit STEM organization,Motivated by Numbers. My vision is to equip K-12 youth with a new set of core skills to analyze evidence and to solve technically difficult problems. Technology is central to everything and a college degree in Computer Engineering would empower me with the foundation and tools needed to solve technical and operational issues.
I am driven to innovate due to the fact that many schools today don’t offer career exploration classes. I see this as a major gap in the education system because career exploration connects the purpose of a college degree to our goals. I would fill in that gap by starting, Motivated by Numbers, that will target youth in underserved areas with STEM training. Laptops, up-to-date laboratories, and internet access would just be the beginning. I would also teach subjects related to engineering, mathematics, and science in a fun way to promote learning.
My plan is to give students the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments, take educational field trips where students apply the knowledge learned in the classroom to the real world, and connect students with industry professionals as mentors based upon the strong engineering network and relationships I will build in college. I want students to walk away with increased skills, STEM knowledge, a deeper understanding of how to critically think and solve problems, and an increased likelihood of an Engineering career. I am very committed to sharing what I have learned in college for the purpose of helping others.
This is how I have already affected positive change. I was chosen as the Georgia Money Smart Teen Ambassador last year. As the ambassador, I promoted financial literacy in my community by speaking to students at financial education events. As the teen ambassador, I was accountable to the cohorts within my community and I worked hard to inspire my peers to make better financial decisions. In my high school Math class, the teacher allowed me to discuss the importance of having a checking and savings account. These experiences encouraged me to enhance my own financial health and open up a bank account.
My family and I have been volunteering for years, so I believe in paying it forward in my community. I have provided more than 150 volunteer hours at numerous organizations, such as nursing homes, summer camps, food banks, and many more organizations. As a volunteer, I was able to solve problems and also make positive changes within my community. With this scholarship, I can continue my education and continue working to improve the quality of life for others with an Engineering degree. Thank you to Varsity Tutors for helping out within the community to help students like me pursue my goals in life.
