In your opinion, what is the purpose of education? by Kerstin - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Education is for the general betterment of humanity and the planet it inhabits as well as everything its hand touches.

It encourages innovation, forward thinking, invention as well as the emotional and mental development of its participants.

I say this because as we look through the ages of history we can see the hand of education in every facet of human growth and development, from the age of cave men and the invention of the wheel to the time that a man walked on the moon.

Through education we have managed to invent many forms of communication each different from the other yet all achieving the exact same goal. Speech, different languages through sound, writing in each such language, sign language, pictorial language, and language through different form of art such as rock art and the use of textiles like knots, tapestries and weaving.

Through our ability to communicate with one another through the ages we have managed to record our findings and as such learn from another instead of each new generation having to begin anew.

All of these abilities are taught through what we now refer to as basic education, the ability to read and write.

Due to education we have medicine, languages, science and chemistry, we have math and astronomy to name a very short list.

These things may sound like a list of facts yet each one of them has been invented through education and innovation, without education we might very well still be living in caves and huts hunting to survive, not because we where not capable or intelligent enough to achieve more but rather because no one had been taught more.

Education is the only way that we has human beings can guarantee that there will always be a path forward for our race, it ensures our continued survival and the survival of many future generations.
