Leadership = Success by Kerrie - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

There are two types of people in this world: those who are followers and those who are leaders. A follower is someone who travels behind and mimics others that are in front of them. On the other hand, a leader is someone who leads or conducts the group. Leaders are those who are in control of the group and things taking place at that time. Whereas, the followers are those who lag behind those in front of them and do as others do. To be a leader means much more than to just be in charge, it means you go out of your way to make sure something gets done correctly. But why is leadership important?

College is where most people start their adult life. They begin to live on their own, buy their own things, and do their own laundry, and so on and so fourth. When you think of those who are well-known, successful, college graduated, men and women in this nation, the characteristics of those people that come to mind are those that are independent, intelligent, strong willed, and also most likely, a leader. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and President Barack Obama, are a few examples of those types of successful people who made their way to the top with hard work and dedication. Without their leadership, they wouldn’t be as successful and well known as they are today. That is why leadership is a very important and crucial trait to have. If you are a leader, people look up to you and remember you.

Leadership is important for college for many reasons. First, if you show leadership qualities in college, you make more friends and more people know whom you are because you put yourself out to the public. Second, you have the chance to do better in college because you join more clubs, and have better grades because you strive and try harder in all of your classes. Last and most importantly, because you show these leadership qualities, when you go to job interviews for after you graduate college, they will see that you were a member of several clubs, and were close with your professors, and did very well academically, therefore increasing your chances of being hired and making your resume look better overall. So, not only can leadership benefit someone socially, but also academically and mentally. Leadership isn’t about being the boss of everyone else; it’s about taking the initiative to strive for greatness in yourself. Those will leadership qualities stand out among the rest in a positive way. Like the famous John Quincy Adams once said, “ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
