Leaving my mark by kelsey - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
My school is located in a harsh part of town that is surrounded by houses of low income, thus it is hard for some families to afford basic needs. I was informed on this issue when I arrived to my high school, and was aware that a change needed to happen. I started joining clubs that gave back to my community and influenced other students to do the same. School clubs such as environmental and student government started growing in numbers and more and more started to show up to help give back to the community; my friend Jada and I even started our own club called 'Woman Up'. Our efforts towards making school a better place along with helping the student body gain access to common needs has been really successful and I am so happy that other students are getting motivated to help out as well.
The environmental club is one of the first clubs I joined when I got to high school. This club showed me the importance of taking care of the environment and what I can do to make sure that our earth stays healthy for as long as possible. I've recruited multiple people to join the club so that they too can help our community stay clean of litter. With the student body being educated on the environment and ways to keep it clean, I believe that our community will grow to be more environmentally cautious.
Woman Up is another big factor that has been helping my school with resources and solving issues. As a club we have been collecting clothes to donate to our school and local women's battered shelters. Our school guidelines won't accept students who are improperly dressed and if they show up to school out of dress code then they will have to miss out on their education and sit in ISS for the day. Our club donates clothes so that students can just change into school approved clothes that aren't horrendous or the wrong size, this way students can go back to class and if they are in need of clothes they can keep the ones given to them. Other aspects of the club include fighting issues within the school. We are currently looking into finding a donor of menstrual products so that if a girl comes to school unprepared they can just go down to the office and get what they need. We are also going on field trips that will inspire the female students to aim high and learn about women in power in our very own community. This club Is very beneficial to both the student body and the school,I believe that an impact is being made by our willingness to give and allowing students all materials necessary.
Overall my activity in high school has been pretty life changing and has meant a lot in these last four years. I've learned about people from all walks of life and was able to understand the struggles that some of these students come from. When I leave I will be leaving behind clubs full of educated students that have a hunger for change. I'm glad that I was able to make a difference in my school and allow students to have easy access to materials along with teaching them that they too can make a change in their community.
