What's the Purpose of Education? by Kelsea - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

All our life, we are told to continue our education and make something of ourselves. Many of us complete our high school careers, while there are some who never finish high school. Those who finish choose whether they want to continue on with school or just go into the work force. Education is a very important thing to me.

Then what is the purpose of education? The purpose of education, to me, is to give you the opportunity to do more with your life than just work in a job you may dislike. It opens up so many more doors to you that many others would never get to experience. Despite having to go years through school just to achieve more, it is worth it in the end. It is a chance for people who want to work somewhere that they would really enjoy and have a passion for to get to that point. Going to school, whether it is kindergarten through twelfth grade or college and on, is definitely worth it in the end because once you have that diploma/ certificate in hand it will make you feel amazing.

Another purpose of education is so you may prosper in the future. By having an education, you can get a good paying job and be able to support yourself and eventually a family. Some learn what it is like to grow up poor the hard way, and some never experience what it is like. Unlike my friends, I grew up in poverty and I know what it is like to struggle with just minimum wage jobs to factory jobs. It was difficult, but we pulled through. That is why I am so determined to go farther with my education so my family will never have to experience what I have.

One last purpose of education is so that we learn to communicate effectively, write effectively, and develop social skills. Going to school helps us learn to communicate, write, read, solve problems, learn another language (in high school), become sociable, and develop skills that we need to succeed in life. If we did not have the education we do then we would not be able to communicate effectively with each other nor would we understand each other.

In conclusion, education is a much needed experience for everyone, even if it is only through high school. When we are younger, it is a critical time period for us to learn and develop. There are several purposes to education, but I feel that these are the main focuses of education and the reason education is so important and should be something everyone considers to finish.
