College Builds Leaders by Kelly - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership is a characteristic that is valued. It is valued because so many people struggle to gain it, keep it and be good at it. In school, and especially in college, leadership becomes a crucial part of your life that builds you up to be a great student and career person. Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Absolutely - Here are a few reasons why.
First, there takes a great level of self-control when one goes to college. The daily responsibilities increase to not just completing homework, assignments, essays and projects, but now issues of time-management, balancing work and school life, keeping friendships strong, not going out too much and keeping the house in order come into play. Leadership can be a tool to harness self-control in the way of inspiring your friends and classmates. In young folks especially, their peers’ actions influence their private and public lives. Setting a good example of having fun in college while completing your responsibilities build character, plus it is always flattering and builds up your self-esteem to have ones peers ask for advice or compliment ones success.
Secondly, college is a decision. Unlike grade school, where student attendance is mandatory by the state, college is a decision-based education. Students have to apply to several colleges, make a decision on which one to attend, make arrangements on finances, move from home, acclimate themselves to a new environment, study regularly to make good grades and hope that all that effort gets them to graduation. Students are manifested into leaders through this process. Their ability to complete these steps of college creates a level of maturity, ambition and follow-through that shows burgeoning leadership skills. These students have directed the course of their own lives, which is what lead means. Leading oneself through this process is a necessary feature for college success.
Thirdly, there can be a level of guarantee to say that at some point, a student will have to be a leader of a group project, club or job. Attempting to accomplish these tasks without leadership skills is a recipe for disaster. In college, what a student learns is what they bring to job-force, and having some integrity to speak up for what is right, try to prove a right answer or give yourself the opportunity to move up and make a difference at your job is made by having leadership skills of some kind.
College is a great opportunity for its students. The chance to learn more about ones field of study builds knowledge, but the learning and enacting leadership is what makes their experience successful. Leadership through self-control is a great way to fulfill a student’s responsibilities and inspire others to follow suite. Making the decision to go to college and following-through with it builds leadership through the transformation of ones own life. Not having leadership to accomplish assignments in college does not make for a successful career as a student and beyond. All students should be proud of themselves for having made it to college and have enough self-credit to pat themselves on the back. Be proud of going to college, it fuels leadership in all it’s students.
