Tens by Keli - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Ten seconds. Had you waited ten seconds to send that text, you would not be standing over your best friend's grave at this instant.

Ten minutes. If you hadn't stayed behind to talk to your friends about that video game for another ten minutes, you might have caught the bus that just left.

Ten hours. When your sister told you to volunteer with her at the soup kitchen on Saturdays, for an amazing ten-hour workday, you hadn't expected, but were pleasantly surprised to find that there was, a scholarship available for students with such commitment.

Ten days. Your teacher assigned this report ten days ago; had you started it then, you wouldn't be panicking, running to get last minute supplies and instructions.

Ten weeks. Training after-school at the local community center for ten weeks seemed a lot at first; but finally getting into the Varsity team at school was definitely worth those ten weeks of relentless running and sweating.

Ten months. The school-year is over. While your friends are all heading out for their summer plans and activities, you're stuck in summer school because you thought it'd be cool to ditch those easy art classes in the beginning of the school year.

Ten years. This is it. You sign the final papers. The real-estate agent hands you the keys to your new house. After years of hard-work, it all paid off when you graduated college, began working at your dream job, and even managed to land a nice home at a decent price which, let's face it, is not easy to find nowadays.

When you're making a decision in high school, even later in the long-run, if you are really unsure on how to proceed, think of the effects in terms of ten. In ten seconds, how will this affect me? In ten minutes, will this make a difference in my life? In ten hours, ten days, ten weeks, ten months, ten years. Everything you do, has some sort of affect on the future, on both minuscule and universal levels. How your future unravels, is completely up to you: choose wisely.
