Education is a Privilege by Keighlan - January 2021 Scholarship Essay

I would consider education to be a privilege. Many gifted young students in the world are lacking the financial aid, determination, and guidance needed to get through schooling. Because of this, sadly, many children miss out on opportunities to pursue their dreams and use their talents to help better their community. This is why I say education is a privilege.
The main reason why I believe education to be a privilege is because of how expensive schooling is these days. While not every child dreams of attending a school or graduating from college, there are definitely many out there who would love to be able to pursue their dreams through their schooling. Unfortunately, many children simply do not have the funds to attend school. Most often, the child’s parents or guardians are often lacking the funds to send their kid to a proper school. Only the families that make a decent amount of money can send their children to school. Only some children receive the privilege of earning an education.
Another reason why education is a privilege is because of how much responsibility it requires to complete. As a homeschooler, I was taught at a young age to be self-motivating. By the time I was in high school, I was in charge of mapping out when I needed to turn in each of my assignments since I didn’t have a teacher I was seeing daily to remind me. I am grateful for having these challenges at such a young age. Long after my schooling days, I know they will benefit me throughout my adulthood. Whether a student’s education is online or in a classroom, school teaches children how to take responsibility. It is a privilege to get to learn and grow in this way.
The final reason why I consider education to be a privilege is since not all children have people in their lives that they can look to for guidance. In the education system, there are many people whose jobs are to help teach, advise, and guide hundreds of students. While some of these teachers and advisors make mistakes at times, they still work to do their job well and to help their children along. A child might not see it at the time, but it is a great privilege to receive such guidance and preparation for their adult lives. Not all children have access to such aid.
Unfortunately in our day and age, education has become a privilege. Students who lack the money, resolve and supervision from trusted adults are far less likely to be well off in life. In my opinion, it is a privilege to attend school and to receive a proper education.
