Life Is Like a Play by Kaylyn - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

Teachers shape the learning experiences and the futures of their students. While I had always loved school, I seemed to keep getting one boring English teacher after another; Fortunately, that all ended last year, when Mrs. Coleman became my AP English teacher. The course was extremely challenging, but Mrs. Coleman always found a way to make her class fun. When we would discuss novels, she seemed to make the stories come to life in her vivid and colorful explanations of them. She had a way of diving deeper into the meaning of the books we read, in a way that could be easily understood by everyone. She always made herself available before and after class to answer questions and help with essays and assignments. Mrs. Coleman helped to show her students that school can be both challenging and fun at the same time. AP English was considered by everyone to be a rigorous course, but with her knowledge and guidance she made it seem like a breeze.

Mrs. Coleman not only taught us English, she showed us that education is the key that unlocks opportunity, new experiences, and invites success. She taught us that with hard work and determination, we can do anything we set our minds to. Mrs. Coleman once said, “Life is like a play. We each have our own role, but we have the power to write our own script.” That quote has always stayed with me, but I never fully realized what that quote meant until now. Because of Mrs. Coleman, I have decided that I want to go to school to become a teacher. I hope that I will become as great of a teacher as she was, and instill in others a love and value for education.
