Leadership is an important skill to have in any team effort. Throughout life, people are constantly put into leadership roles or work below them. Even children in elementary school are chosen to be the legendary "line leader". Every sports team has a captain, every business has a boss, every classroom has a teacher. Our society functions around either being led or taking lead. Understanding and being able to take a leadership role is an important life long skill. Leadership skills are important in many situations in everyday life, including college.

College gives students amazing opportunities to advance their leadership skills in many different situations. Studying is a very large part of college life, and studying with other students is often helpful and necessary. Leadership can be shown in study groups by someone taking charge to keep fellow students on track to complete the assignment. Leadership is also important in team projects, someone needs to take the initiative to get the ball rolling on the project and help people get focused on the task at hand.

Leadership skills are important in college settings other than in the classroom or library. Sports and intramurals are a large part of college life, it is crucial to have a leader on a sports team because the teammates need someone to look to for direction. Leaders help to keep practice or games going, they give encouraging feedback and tips on how to improve skills. Sports are not the only extra-curricular that requires a leader, however. Musicals and drama also require someone to step forward and take control of practices and performances to make sure they run smooth and everyone is on the same page.

Work opportunities on a college campus also require many leadership skills. Resident Advisers in residence halls are important in college and leadership skills are crucial in these roles. It is important to be able to work with a team, mediate conflicts, and help people in this type of setting. To do this, leaderships skills are very important.

Our society revolves around leaders and it is important to build leadership skills throughout your whole life. College is a great opportunities to apply and build these skills in many different settings ranged from a classroom setting to a work study.
