Turning Trials Around by Kaylee - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was a freshman, I decided to try out for gymnastics. I undertook junior varsity as an eighth grader, but I wasn’t sure if I could make varsity. I entered with my leotard on, determined to do well; however, I never got that opportunity. As I went to perform a stunt on the bars, I hit the ground head first and had bowling ball sized bruises on both calves. I was truly fortunate to not have any lasting side effects after that terrible fall; nevertheless, I was not chosen for the team. I was distraught and was left with nothing except mental and physical pain.
When spring rolled around, I decided to try out for tennis because I didn’t want to just sit around sulking. I soon learned that I enjoyed playing tennis immensely; I connected with everyone who played with me. I even became the tennis captain and played doubles on the ladder. The next year I did musical too, and I now love performing musicals. It is an amazing honor to be able to perform next to other wonderfully talented people. In both of these activities, I worked very hard and learned all that I could.
At the time I wasn’t allowed to be on the gymnastics team, I was very upset; I just didn’t understand why. Now, looking back, I am beyond grateful I didn’t make it. Through these experiences, I have learned that I should be positive. I know the Lord has denied me one blessing so that I can have 100 more blessings. Although my life events will not always go my way, I will try my best to look for the best in the situation and strive to be the best I can in whatever situation.
