Things You Will Definitely Need to Know How to Do by Kayla - August 2015 Scholarship Essay
There are so many classes and subjects I would like to add to the normal American High school curriculum. Things that I believe are important to everyday life in general, that every high school student should know before it’s over, and people move on into the real world. I’m not saying it isn’t important to challenge your brain and get your gears spinning, but there are so many things that we learn in school that are completely irrelevant to life after that class is over. It’s pretty sad that some students can sit there and solve out an extremely advanced derivative in calculus, but have zero idea how to fold their own laundry. There are so many things that I believe should be added to the curriculum, but if I could add one myself I would call it, the subject of things you will definitely need to know how to do.
In my class, “things you will definitely need to know how to do”, I would have a curriculum by which teachers teach the students how to do accentual things. For example, how to change a tire. There are approximately 210 million licensed drivers within the United States. Now think about how many people would actually know what to do if there was some sort of auto mechanical failure. For one, I know that if my car broke down and I had no way of calling for help, I would have an absolute melt down. The amount of blow outs and flat tires people deal with every day, are at an averagely high number. So why not know how to change your tire? From what I hear, it is an extremely simple task that I’m sure you could save people valuable time if you just deal with it yourself. Another thing I would teach in my new portion of the curriculum would be how to do your taxes. As a seventeen your old student, I have not a clue in the world about what taxes are. I hear my parents talk about them all the time so I know off them, but if it came down to me actually having to do them, I would be one hundred percent lost. Everyone has to pay taxes, so why not teach people how to do them, and maybe make life a little easier. Next, I would include learning how to manage money properly. This is just one more thing I have no sense of once so ever. I have been working for about two years now, and I still have no idea how to properly manage my money. After all, money makes the world go round, so why not teach students what it is like to save and use their money for useful things instead of blowing it in one shot. These three things are just a few useful topics that would be taught in this useful subject.
Although learning how to do taxes, changing a tire and managing money are extremely important, this curriculum of “things you will definitely need to know” can go on forever. The normal High school curriculum could definitely use a touch up, and I truly believe adding a class of extremely useful things would be the best idea yet.
