Changes For Education In the Next Twenty Years by Kayla - May 2020 Scholarship Essay
Today's educational system is definitely lacking in some areas. These being communication between students and teachers, updated information and the reasons teachers strive to teach. I think that in twenty years those problems could be significantly worked on. The way that teachers communicate is significantly through technology and less through physical papers assigned. Assigning, completing and turning in assignments online through school issued computers or tablets raises a lot of complications. The information provided to teachers is mostly found in old textbooks that teachers have had for longer than four to eight years. The problem with this is that the information necessary for SAT and ACT tests is more advanced than what is offered at school. The way that most teachers educate their students is mostly to get them through tests. They teach students the information necessary to complete a test on the given subject. If teachers are taught to educate their students strictly so that they absorb knowledge and how to apply it to the tests given. The more students would leave school with knowledge of subjects instead of knowledge of tests.
In twenty years teachers should have significantly reverted back to paper assignments. Instead of giving students math assignments to complete online, give them paper assignments to work on physically. It is proven that the more times you physically write something down the more likely you are to retain the information and have more accuracy when recalling it. For example when writing this essay it is easier to recall certain words, like the word recall, when writing it on paper first. This also makes it easier to revise the essay with less grammatical errors and better sentence flow.
The information necessary that teachers is given is old. We are taught the same things as our parents were but just in a different way. Instead of old information being overused we could just change what we are teaching. For example history class, my senior year I used the same notes I took my sophomore year and aced my class. Students younger than me ask to see the notes I took because the power point presentations didn't change. Giving teachers updated information can also help them find more joy in teaching and keep their students more entertained. In twenty years we should be able to have accurate and updated information that keeps the focus of students because of its relevance.
Lastly the way teachers go about teaching is more so along the lines of just meeting requirements. Instead of enjoying learning we are taught what to memorize for the tests. For example in math class we were taught using real world examples in younger grade. We learned addition using apples and pencils and things. Now in high school we write notes of every single thing on the board or what our teacher says. Then we memorize everything we can for the test. Teaching to memorize is not conducive to truly learning the topic. In twenty years we should have made at least some progress on informing our students on certain topics and not how to memorize key points for a test.
In conclusion, education in twenty years should be more evolved and more efficient. Teaching knowledge of a subject should come from reputable sources that are updated to date and accurate, not from textbooks used more than four years ago. We can have new information accurately taught to our younger generations. The new waves of teaching may come in sounding very complicated, if we are to focus on getting the accurate point across to the students so they can accurately retain and recall information. Education in twenty years can be changed for the better if we focus on truly educating our students in a more efficient fashion.
