Describe one way you believe you have positively impacted your high school and its student body. by Kayla - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

Dallastown High School has become a very diverse student body within the last four years. I noticed that with this growing diverse demographic, there was room to better understand diversity within the student body. During my Junior year, a few of us approached the school administration about starting a Black Student Union (BSU); it would be the first time this group existed at the school. I accepted this as an opportunity not just to raise awareness, but to gain a better understanding of myself and how I can have a positive impact at my school.

Forming this group allowed us to host the very first Black History program where we raised awareness of African American culture, history and influence. We received positive feedback and responses from the student body and faculty. At the end of the school year, I was voted President of the Black Student Union for the next academic school year. This year my goal was to focus on raising awareness of African Americans’ contributions within the United States in politics, sports, music, education and inventions. Each month we highlight contributions in each of these areas to raise awareness of the African American contributions in the fabric of our society. This has been a very rewarding process for me as I hope it has for my school.
