The Purpose of Education by Katy - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of an education is for people to better their lives. An education does this by opening a person’s mind to new concepts and other ways of thinking. Education opens doors through knowledge. Acquiring knowledge helps a person to better understand the world around them and the people that they share it with. Many conflicts are the result of not understanding one another. By opening our minds we are more likely to understand those who think differently than we do and thus we can help to resolve conflicts or even stop them before they even start. Education can also make a person more well-rounded. People who have a broader range of knowledge are more likely to do better in life. These people have a wider range of jobs that they can apply for and thus have a better chance of procuring a job, as well as being more adaptable. A broad education can prepare a person for multiple scenarios that they might encounter in life. This way they are ready for whatever life might throw at them. For these reasons it is important that we give people a good education, starting at a young age with our children, this way we can prepare them to be successful adults.
Gaining an education can instill great sense of pride in a person. Education is hard work, but the end result is worth it. We spend many years of our lives in the process of education and that process can have a profound impact on our futures. It can affect what kind of job someone gets and how well they do at their job and even their rate of pay. Since education has such an important influence on our lives we must work hard to do well and are provided with an education that is worth the effort. A good education can change a person’s future and help them to be successful and live good lives. When a person is able to do these things they are better off and can be proud in their accomplishments. It is at that time that people look back at the education they received throughout their lives and can be thankful that they had a good and well-rounded education that allowed them to live life to the fullest.
On May 4, 2013 I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Evansville with a BA in Archeology and became the first person in my family to receive a Bachelor’s degree. My graduation day was the proudest day of my life. Receiving that diploma meant that I had done it. I had overcome all of the obstacles that had been thrown at me and came out the better for it. While at times it was far from easy I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. My time spent at the University of Evansville made me a better, more broad-minded person and I made relationships there that will forever influence my life. If I had not had received a higher education I would never have had the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. By following by passion I got to study abroad in the English countryside and travel throughout Europe and I got to do field work on the Texas-Mexico border working with 4,000 year old rock art, an experience that inspired me to focus my studies on Native American cultures of the South-West. Without pursuing a degree in archaeology I never would have interned at a house museum and got work with their collections and never would have discovered my dream of working in collections management. However, my dream does not stop with a Bachelor’s degree. I intend to further my education with a Master’s degree in Museum Studies. I am young and have a lot of life ahead of me and with my passion and drive I know that I can overcome the obstacles that life throws at me, all I have to do is remember where I came from and how far I have come already.
