How the Internet Hasn’t Empowered My Education by Katie - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

In discussing how the Internet has affected my education, I think it might be easier to discuss how the Internet hasn’t empowered me because I use the Internet daily. As a student, I’ve accessed the Internet to improve the quality of my education, to gain knowledge, find relevant materials, and increase my opportunities. I’ve used www.ratemyprofessors.com to find out which professor is the most informative and makes a class interesting. I make online appointments with my Advising Team for counseling about upcoming classes and I’m sent Internet links to research for class discussions from my professors.
On a personal level, I use Internet reviews of restaurants close to campus to give me an idea of the food choices and customer feedback and to see what movies are playing nearby. Lately, the Internet has educated me about foreign places and has brought me emotionally closer to my family. I have a cousin who is a few years older than I am; she lives close by and I’ve always looked up to her. She decided to join the Peace Corps and was stationed in a village in the Ukraine. Having never left the USA, I had no idea what living overseas was like but thanks to the Internet, I was able to see photos of the town that she was in and learned a few words in Ukrainian. I made a local meal (Chicken Kiev…yum!) and learned about noteworthy people from the area. It made me feel nearer to my cousin and supportive of her.
Overall, I am so thankful every time that I use the Internet because it makes me a more informed person about world locally and far away.
