A Teacher Who Helped Influence Me by Kathryne - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
Education is a very important key to being successful. I always thought that I wanted to become a teacher when I grew up, but as I progressed through high school, I came to realize that this was definitely my calling. A lady who is very influential in this decision, I will call her Karen, is a wonderful second grade teacher in my hometown.
During my high school career, I had the opportunity to take teaching classes at our applied technology center. These classes allowed for me to be in an actual classroom and to teach the students. Karen was the classroom teacher where I was assigned. During this short period of time in my senior year, I was able to spend a few hours a week in the class. What a wonderful experience. Karen was not only a teacher to the students, but in many ways a parent, counselor, and a mentor.
I could immediately tell the students who needed more assistance in the classroom. This assistance may have been emotion or academic. I did not know what type of background or homelife the children had so I admired Karen for providing whatever support the specific child needed. What a rewarding experience to see the faces of these children light up when they saw me during each visit to the classroom.
Teaching can be a very challenging but also a rewarding career. It will take a lot of work and effort, but I also want to be the type of teacher who provides whatever kind of support that my students need. Getting a good education and having a love for school instilled at an early age, are very crucial. How special it will be to see smiling faces of children who want to come to my classroom, and to watch them continue through their educational career.
