Master the Conglomerate, Find Success by Kathryn - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

For college success, leadership skills can be helpful in reaching goals, but they are not necessary. Some people may be shocked by this claim, but, please, hear me out. Leadership skills are no doubt useful; however, there are other skills that will lead a student to much more success. Many college students that were top of their class in high school will claim that they did not have to study much to get decent grades, and then those same students will say that behavior changed drastically when they got to college. Therefore, I would argue that strong study skills are necessary for college success. I do not mean to belittle leadership skills. These skills are important mostly for extracurricular activity success; especially if a student is the president of a club or captain of a team. But if college success is defined as upholding a strong grade point average and graduating on time, then study skills are much more necessary for that success than simply leadership.

On the one hand, I claim that study skills are more important to master than leadership skills. On the other hand, I do not see how only one set of skills can be used for college success. There must be a strong balance of many skill sets put together in order to achieve well-rounded college success. Study skills are used for making good grades. Leadership skills are used for clubs and other activities. Time management skills are used to include volunteer hours. Social skills are used for networking with employers for internships or jobs.

There is a whole cluster of skills necessary for life success in general. It is difficult to claim that only one would be necessary for college success. But as I have explained, there is one that can outweigh all the others. However, mastering a conglomerate of the aforementioned skills will ensure success in any pursuit.
