I too am beginning a change by Katherine - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

As summer fades into fall, many changes abound. Leaves begin their change to vibrant colors of yellow and orange. Days of warm summer temperatures begin their change to cool, crisp fall nights. Countless high school seniors begin their change to college freshmen. I too am beginning a change. However, unlike my friends, I am not going to college quite yet.

While college is in my future, I want to take some time and develop myself first. College requires more than just attention to academics, it also entails being able to handle almost unlimited freedom. I will be responsible for everything I do, no matter what the task may be. I want to better prepare myself for this challenging responsibility and a gap year is the perfect way to achieve that goal.

One area I would work on during my gap year would be defining myself. Truly understanding my likes and dislikes would help me more fully develop my personality. Once I know who I am as a person, I will be able to provide a significantly higher level of value to my community. Another area of focus would be working full-time. A full-time job would help me build my resume, which is a skill that would benefit me throughout my life. Additionally I would meet a multitude of people that will provide me experience with a variety of tastes and cultures, just as I will when I enter college.

A gap year may not be for everyone but it is something I feel would be very beneficial for me. College can be high-pressure and a gap year would help prepare me for that environment. I want to make the most of my college experience and taking time for myself before I start is the best way for me.
