Education Matters by Katana - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

The point of a college education is to prepare students for jobs. Going to college trains each student and helps them gain knowledge in the specific career field they choose. A college education opens more doors to future careers, since a college graduate is more likely to land more jobs than a high school graduate (this is because the college graduate has more expertise in their particular field, and also has experienced more years of overall education). Even though college teaches students the skills needed to succeed academically, it goes far beyond that.

Aside from teaching skills that will result in academic success, college also teaches students skills for succeeding at life, in general. College is a trial version of the real world. It is a student's transition from being a carefree teenager to a responsible adult. For many, college is the first time a student will live among a vast range of different people. Therefore, going to college and living on campus teaches students how to appropriately deal with people, and get used to being around different personalities. College is also the first time for many students to have jobs, earn their own money, and do things on their own. Therefore, college also helps students to adjust to doing things independently. A college education prepares students for the future in both aspects, so when students graduate from college, they should be not only prepared for work, but also prepared for life.
