Be the Example by Kassidy - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Being a leader is more than just having people follow your lead. A leader must be confident, a leader must be willing to go the extra mile to show others the importance, and a leader must demonstrate what is truly possible. The leader has to set the example and be the guide for others. What would the world be like if there were no leaders? One of the greatest most life changing leaders was Martin Luther King Jr. He created the path and paved the way for others to follow. He had a cause and stuck with it no matter how hard it was for him and his family. If Martin Luther King had showed weakness, given up, and did not set the example of what was right, we would not be the same society that we are today. Leaders are a necessity in our society for us to look up to and rally behind. I am and will always strive to be a leader. Leadership is a skill that leads to success in college and in life.
The weight of the world is on ones shoulders when they are the standard others want to live up to. When everyone is looking to one individual for guidance, it is important for him to always be on his game in order to never let his followers down. Due to this need to not let society down, the leader will always work hard to be the best he can be. This is a skill that can be transferred to college. In school, we all must do our homework and study in order to do the best we can in school. We cannot slack and blow off our work if we want to succeed. Being a leader instils a sort of drive in oneself and need to succeed to be the example. I know this feeling from personal experience. I have been a soccer coach and an assistant leader for Girl Scouts for 2 years for children ages kindergarten to third grade. When there are a number of kids looking to me for guidance and to teach them, I always knew I had to be the perfect role model for them. This, for me, meant I had to do well in school, stay involved in my school and my community, and to always help others. The need to succeed to be the perfect role model will lead to success in college.
To be a good leader, many other skills are required such as time management, people skills, and communication skills. These transferable skills will lead to excellence in college. A college student needs superior time management skills in order to juggle homework, studies, extracurricular activities, and to just enjoy college life. Time management allows one to better plan out his time to get all daily activities done. For some, sleeping or having fun is more important than doing homework. When we run out of time for homework and studying out stress goes up and we begin to slip in our grades. Some cannot handle the pressure and drop out which is why time management is so important. People and communication skills can help one in college when it comes to making friends, presenting, and even asking questions. Success in college is not just our grades but also making friends and making a positive mark on the school. If one goes through college without the skills to make friends and talk to others, he may feel alone. When we feel alone, it takes away the joys of life and college is no different. Feeling like one is a part of something bigger, having friends, and keeping the stress level down will lead to success in college.
Leading does not only mean showing a group how to do something, it also means getting involved in the schools and the community. It means putting for the extra time and effort, and succeeding to be the perfect example. Leadership is a skill that leads to success in college and life. Being a leader allows one to learn many other skills such as time management, communication skills, and people skills. These skills all lead to excellence and success in college. Does this mean all leaders must be the same and always be perfect at all times? No, no one is perfect and not all leaders are the same. Every person is his or her own kind of leader. Everyone is unique and we all fail sometimes, but being a leader means to get back up after the fall and strive to become the best person he or she can be.
