Privileges Without Morals by Kassandra - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

“My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors.” Education is a beautiful opportunity that is literally handed to millions of children and teenagers, but is continuously taken for granted. Yet, there are those who take advantage of what they are given and make a living out of it. It is very disappointing to see a student not trying to get an education when they have the opportunity to do so, without worrying about the cost. There are people all over the world who wish they had this type of possibility, but have no means of doing so.

Education is the basic foundation that is needed for the rest of our lives, without it, our possibilities for the future are limited. Xenophon once said, “If you consider what are called the virtues in mankind, you will find their growth is assisted by education and cultivation.” Many students do not see the importance of knowledge and would rather stay home where they would much rather sit around playing video games not doing anything productive when they could be at school learning, but they choose to cut classes and stay in the bathroom or wander the hallways for over an hour rather than be in class working productively.
There are ways for schools to keep students interested in learning such as creating more clubs and organizations and also by promoting more school spirit. Most schools already incorporate these activities, yet students still do not take advantage of the opportunities they are provided with. Students forget that once they are over the age eighteen, the institution they attend is no longer required to have them in school. So why goof off and throw away a chance at a free education? They lack the importance of morals, discipline, and responsibility. They have been treated like children for their entire lives and were never allowed to mature.

Parents play an enormous role in molding their child’s attitude towards his/hers future. Most parents are not as involved in their child’s education as they should be. They should make their child aware from a young age, the importance of a good education and of the consequences of not getting one until they are fully capable of understanding it.

With all of the opportunities that are available to people in America, one would think everyone would be working hard in order to reach their highest potential, but that is not the case, only a selective few work for what they want to achieve. Most individuals take for granted what others cannot have. There are children all across the world that jump for joy at the thought of getting an education and would happily take another’s place. Many go to great lengths in order to make that wish come true such as leaving for school without breakfast, walking several miles and even taking multiple buses in order to reach their destination, but they still look forward to learning with the hope of creating a better life. They understand the importance of an education; something that many of us do not. Imagine what they can achieve with the opportunities that we take for granted.

The opportunities that children and teenagers are given are limitless. But it is entirely up to them whether or not they choose to use them. The bottom line is: do not take education for granted because one day, it will no longer be available.
