Advice for Incoming High School Freshmen
If I had been given advice as a high school freshman, I would have greatly appreciated it. The usual “advice” given is to not get on a senior’s bad side, keep quit, and stay out of the way. Come to find out none of this mattered.
The one piece of advice I would give to new high school freshmen is to buy a planner and learn good time management. This is something I did not have until the last semester of my senior year. If anyone other than my parents had told me this then I would have listened. I know now that I have to get important things out of the way if I am going to do the fun things I want to do. School is the number one priority and if you work hard then you get to have a little fun. This is a concept I did not really seem to grasp until it was almost too late. My Mom recently told me a story about rocks and how to make them fit into a jar. She explained that you need to add the biggest rocks (important things) into the jar first, then add smaller rocks (less important things), and then add pebbles (the least important things). If the jar is filled in this order, everything will fit. The moral is to always prioritize the things in life to make sure the important things get scheduled first so they are sure to get done. The little things can be squeezed in if there is time, or room in the jar. Learning and incorporating this concept prevents last minute hurried outcomes that can leave you pretty stressed out.
If you learn how to wisely manage your time then your entire high school career will be a blast. You will be able to make the grades, play sports, and have fun. The way I see it high school is about the experience so why not make it pleasant by being organized and prepared for everything.
