Attendance and Distractions by Kaniya - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

It was my last couple of months in high school as a senior, and frequently I began to receive the college talk. “College is not the same as high school.” “Always go to class.” “Make sure you do all you work.” Do not get me wrong, I did believe them; however, it felt like they were overexerting just a little bit. Everything that my close ones told me remained in my head. September 2016 finally approached, for Fall I had labs since I was in a Culinary Arts major. Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry majors are so different compared to a regular major like Business Management, Fashion, etc. Our freshman year you would have to do two sets of labs and one set of academics. The labs I had done for fall was not as easy as I thought it would be. I was selected for afternoon classes, which means I would be in class from 1:45 pm – 7:45 pm. Mind you this was only one class, and 4-5 days a week. It was a killer, especially the homework, we had homework every night, reading assignments, and possibly a test. Honestly high school did not prepare me for this type of mission, which probably got me to a point that I had become lazy.
I would wake up around 10 am to begin my day, but for some reason during the fall term I would have this mindset to not go to class. I would hate that I had that mentality everyday knowing that I would have that class only for 9 days, then switch to a different class. I could only skip one day out of the nine days of each class. Just because I would be tired or just not be in the mood to not be in the mood to go to class. It felt so wonderful to be in bed, getting all the rest you can while everyone else is in class doing work. Until the following day of class, you have absolutely no clue of what you are doing in class. Having to ask your classmates or professor constantly on what to do, how to do, and what is this can be quite aggravating. In the winter term, things began more easy just because I was now used to having 6 hours of class. I would still wake up tired, but I would have the motivation to go to class. I even barely used my day off of class to sleep or do some errands. Now I know I should not waste my day just because I need a couple more hours of sleep. If anything if I am still tired, I just need to go to sleep early or eat in the morning so I can build up my energy. Is it really worth skipping class?
