Helping Me Learn by Kallie - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

To the teacher that likes to speed through things it may not seem like I have a hard time, but in all honesty I do. To you I may be failing but you think it's my fault when the truth is it isn't my fault. If I could just ask of you to not speed through all of the examples and let us participate in the lesson. Let the students be active in the class room because what teenager can really sit through a 40 minute class and stay awake.

Teachers today just go lesson to lesson and teach the same things every day. Students can't stay awake if all we do is sit and listen. I work 25 hours a week and when I get to school I can't stay awake and listen to a drone. That just isn't going to happen and honestly I doubt it ever will. If I could change anything it would be to have the students active in the room and don't let them sit there for the whole class period. An example of that would be to have open examples on the board or open discussions about last nights homework. Gather input from this and take in into consideration. Students lose respect from teachers because they won't listen and come to an understanding with the students. This is why kids start to fail with a topic or lesson and never get help. They have the understanding that the teacher won't help and doesn't care if they fail. As a senior I have been there in that situation. If I could just get it across to teachers that if they are open and be there for students then kids will prosper more than ever.

To a teacher one kid may not be a big deal, but think about it, if one kid loses hope how many more will? Be a teacher but be a help. Be that one teacher that kids want to go to and aren't scared of. You'll be surprised at what will happen.
