Education: An Important Desire by Kaleb - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

We as humans are motivated by our desires, think about it, we generally only do things because we want too, and if we didn't want to we probably didn't enjoy doing it. These desires could be to fulfill physical needs like eating, or the temporal desires like money, other examples could include emotional or spiritual desires. Regardless of the type of desire we will usually do what it takes fulfill it. I believe there are many basic human desires that can be fulfilled through obtaining an education, our biggest desire that can be fulfilled through an education, I believe is the desire to feel important.

I believe that obtaining an education gives you the ability to feel important, or a feeling of value. We as humans long to have relationships with others, to be appreciated, to feel loved, to be admired, to feel accomplished, or to summarize ultimately to feel important. This desire begins to be fulfilled as we accomplish our educational goal, maybe to attain a certain educational degree, and as we attain that goal we feel accomplished or important. Then most people after they attain a degree they go and seek a career, as they do so their employers will weigh their value based primarily on education. If receiving an offer to work they would then be valued again to see how much money that person would make, and all of this would leave that person with a sense of acceptance and feeling of value from that employer. These values are then translated from the working world to the persons social world, society will largely weigh a person's importance on their education and career choices. The types of people that we desire relationships with of love or friendship with will be influenced by this as well. These are just a handful of the many ways that an education can determine the way we feel important, but we can see that our education can play a very large role.

As humans we have many different desires and there are many different ways to fulfill them. As we define what it means to us individually to be important, we can choose to educate ourselves, and as we do so it will open many doors for us to fulfill the desire to be important. I like anyone else have that desire to feel important and to me I feel like obtaining an education is a great step in fulfilling that desire.
