From Failure to Success by Kaitlyn - December 2014 Scholarship Essay

Education has been a huge factor in my life since the time I began Kindergarten. I was and still am expected to go to college and get my master’s degree to move on to a career that I will like. Although that sounds very simple, I’ve had some hard times along the way.

Middle school in itself was a breeze for me. Didn’t have much to worry about and I passed classes with flying colors. I knew that was going to end once I entered high school but didn’t really expect the circumstances from my lack of trying in the future. High school came much too fast and while I thought I was used to it by the second week of school, I really wasn’t. In the middle of the semester I was a B student with some C’s and D’s, in particular science and math. I wasn’t proud of it at the time and I still am not, for as I’m applying for college and scholarships, I have to look at that every time and remember that I should’ve tried harder.

Junior year was the worst year for me, grade-wise. I was stressed with my core classes, in particular math and chemistry, while taking on an AP class at the same time. Until I got the letter that I wouldn’t be passing my Algebra II class, I hadn’t opened up my eyes and realized that I was taking advantage of my education, and my teachers’ time. It took me way too long to realize this, as I’m in my senior year of high school right now.

The lesson I got out of my high school experience is something that I will take with me through college. Always do your work thoroughly, ask questions, and give all of your effort. But most importantly, appreciate the education we have because some people aren’t lucky enough to even get to go to school. I may not have been a straight-A student through my four years of high school, but my educational goal through college is to make that goal.
