Knowing you have a friend by Kaitlyn - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have impacted my school by trying to make sure everyone knows that they’re not alone that they always have someone to talk to if they’re going through hard things. I have tried to make sure kids know that self harm is not the only way to handle things. As a junior in high school now I have made it my mission to help kids in the best way I can to make them feel safe and comfortable to talk to someone and get them help when they need it. Since my freshman year I have helped four or five students who have it rougher than others in my school. I have gotten close to them and they’ve opened up to me and told me about their issues and I’ve talked to them and let them know that they have other options.
Now it took time but eventually they had opened up enough to be comfortable with talking to adults, now since then these kids have received the help they need and are doing a lot better. I know that it is not a huge thing but these four or five kids have now been helped down a new path and are doing better than ever now. It makes me very happy to see these kids doing better and living a happy life where they want to be here now. To me this is one of the best feelings in the world because everyone is important even if they don’t feel like they are.
