Following Huckleberry Finn by Kaitlyn - April 2014 Scholarship Essay
The history of literary characters is long and distinguished. For years, authors have created characters that have taught, inspired, and encouraged their biggest fans. Heroes such as Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter show how with persistence and courage in the face of danger any situation can be overcome. Characters such as these have had enormous influence over their readers. However, in all of the books that I have read no character has influenced me personally more than Huckleberry Finn.
Huckleberry Finn is a young teenager in Missouri around the mid-1800’s. Despite his age, Huck shows extraordinary wisdom. Huck Finn looks at the world with simple eyes, yet what he sees is profound. Contrary to the complexities of the ‘wizarding world’ or Holmes’s mysteries, Huckleberry employs an approach that relies on child-like curiosity and innocence as well as perspective.
I have tried to utilize a similar approach in my experiences. Huck Finn does what he enjoys. His adventures are characterized, at times, by some impulsive decisions and carelessness, but readers cannot help but become charmed by his exploits. Finn may have reservations, he may be scared, but he does not allow this to keep him from doing what he loves. This adventurous spirit is something that I have tried to keep as well. Curiosity is essential for the pursuit of dreams. It is the driving force that has kept the world’s thinkers on their paths to greatness, even in times of adversity. For me, curiosity translates into a desire to learn. Following Huck’s example, I have always tried to go into each day wanting to learn something new.
In addition to his spirit of adventure, I have tried to follow Huck Finn’s outlook on life. Huckleberry Finn takes a simple approach when others choose the more complicated route. For me, whenever something becomes overwhelming, I take the approach of Huck. I take a step back, find a new angle from which to view the situation, and keep it simple. Keeping things simple helps me to refocus on the essence of the task, what is truly important. Keeping things simple allows me to focus on the present while still pursuing my dreams.
I have high expectations and aspirations for myself moving forward. I know that I may struggle at times, but by employing the attitude that Huck Finn holds in all of his adventures I will be better enabled to succeed.
