Leadership skills are not necessary for college success by Kai - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
When one first thinks about the question presented, the correct answer would seem to be that leadership skills are necessary for college success. However, I disagree with this statement. The world is made up of leaders and followers. Realistically, there are many more followers in this world than leaders. As a college student, one must follow the lead of numerous professors, we must follow the direction of our bosses during work-study jobs and internships. We must follow the guidance of financial aid advisors when financing our college experience. We must follow our parents' advice, and the advice of admissions staff when choosing the proper college and college courses. The list of rules and guidelines that we must "follow" in college goes on and on.
It is my belief that we must be excellent followers to have a successful college experience. It has often been said that one must be a good follower in order to become a good leader. I believe one usually learns how to become a leader while in college. But I don't believe every successful college student obtains this skill while in college. Leadership is for a select few. We cannot all be leaders. Someone must follow in order for our society to function appropriately. I truly believe good "following" skills are necessary to be successful in college.
