My Dream and How I Found It by Justyn - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

If you asked me what I wanted to be on two separate occasions when I was younger, I would have given you two completely different answers. I had never put much thought into what I wanted to be. Ironically, I, the king of planning, had a problem discovering what my “when-you-grow-up dream” was, and what steps I would need to take to achieve it.
Did I want to be a boss at a large corporation who gets revenge on all those who wronged me? Or did I want to be a teacher…though I might end up throwing books at my students if they do not share the same level of passion that I have. What about the President of the United States? But then, I thought, if I am stressed now, I would be dead by the end of my first year in office. I have been restless—constantly becoming bored with things staying the same—all my life. Though I found things I love to death, it was hard to focus on one thing because I am intrigued by anything that changes, has variety, and gets more complex as time progresses.
Because of my interest in everything, I have become fond of anything that allows me to explore what I already know and learn new things. My mind—which has become like a holographic globe, always spinning, storing information, and worrying about every little thing—has a problem relaxing. Taking art as a forced magnet and music as an elective, I learned the skills I will use in my dream job, as a means of communication to my audience, but these skills also help relieve my mind while serving another purpose. I was able to create amazing and interesting pieces of music and art. I also discovered the beauty of creating my own music, and I began to understand how powerful music can be on myself and others when fueled by emotions.
The most effective way to touch a person is through the media. I want to change the world through my comics, and television. I want to focus on destroying hate which is rooted in religion, beliefs, values, race and a negative environment that some children grow up in by exposing them to a realm where love and friendship are the social norms. What I mean by this is to make the world a place where there is less hate, because I do not think it is possible to get rid of hate, but I do think it is possible to lessen the role it plays in our world. I want to do this by influencing people to take a more open attitude towards others and themselves. Though this may be something that would take years to spread, it just takes one person for a viewpoint to spread because the world will change when the people in it decide to change it even if the changes are so small that only America feels the reverberations. The funny thing about the world is that the power to change lies in every single person; one just has to awaken this innate power and act on it, which is what I want to do with my art.
Finally, after much contemplation, I decided I wanted to create an entertainment company named World Shaping Comics and Entertainment that would produce profound comics, novels, movies, and television series meant to change the world. Some may say I am stubborn and not living in reality. Instead, I like to think of myself as tenacious. You can make anything your reality if you have the will to work, and a pen to fight. And that is how what I wanted to be when I was growing up changed throughout my education.
