If You Had the Opportunity to Create a High School Extracurricular Activity, What Would It Be and Why?
If I had the opportunity to create an extracurricular high school activity, I would create a program that is implemented into the school day for students to find their passions and potential career paths in life. This program would be called Career Enhancement and Availability Acknowledgement (CEAA). This program would be designed for students to create a diverse background in school of what they are potentially interested in. Students would not need this credit to graduate, but it would take place during school for kids who lack the availability to stay after school to part-take in programs and extracurriculars. This particular extracurricular activity allows students, who are interested, to search for subjects/ jobs and careers they may have a potential possibility in pursuing. This is not only educational, but a great way for students to connect with one another and to see other kids around them who have the same interests. Being able to connect with classmates will allow a tighter and closer foundation to be built, strengthening the bond schools strive for between students and staff, as well as students and students.
Students will have eight chances to explore a wide range of career options, as each semester of highschool they will be partnered with a professional mentor in the career they are interested in. Every monday students will have an opportunity to meet with their mentor, ask questions, work on projects with other students and gather information about each course. Each session will last an hour and will continue throughout the semester. Student will have chances to meet with their mentors if they so choose on Friday afternoons. The end goal is to allow students to be able to experience a glimpse of the “real world”, without having to panic, or feel unprepared by the time they finish highschool.
The objective is to have students become excited about the future, rather than fear it. Often, many students, including myself, feel overwhelmed by the idea of life after highschool. We are conditioned at a young age to expect certain subjects to be taught to us every year, ei: Math, P.E, History, and so on. This allows for very little room for children to expand their imagination to something else that might peak their interest. Very so often do kids know what they want to do by the time they are walking on stage to get their diplomas, or even after. Struggling for years to find something they are interested in, while still being able to graduate with the classes and credits they have already accumulated over the years. With the lack of access, students not only feel stressed and overwhelmed, but they end up with high amounts of debt, and see only one way out, dropping out of school. Students need to know that it’s in their best interest of teachers, peers and society to help them succeed. With the addition of this program spread widely throughout highschools across America, and hopefully one day abroad, students will become excited about life outside of highschool, strive to better themselves and their overall education. CEAA will prepare students to journey through life and help them become successful through preparation and diligence.
