Education: A Purpose to Serve All of Life's Purposes by Julie - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

I believe that the purpose of an education is to serve other purposes in one’s life. Getting an education lays down a foundation of knowledge and enables one to pursue opportunities and advance his or her life. In order to achieve goals and create a successful life, an education must be present. You begin this process by taking classes at a young age with the intention of learning general knowledge while also honing in on what you find interesting. Then you take specific courses in that field and study it in depth. This focused learning builds your knowledge in this particular area and creates a passion to pursue a career in this field. Once you obtain a job, various opportunities open up that allow you to learn more about your field, meet people, get promoted, live independently and support yourself, meet a spouse, and raise a family. Without the base education, you wouldn’t have these opportunities and build a life for yourself.

Education is like the root of a tree. From the root grows the bark, which leads to branches and leaves. The branches and leaves all represent the various paths you can take in life. Without the root of a tree, there are no branches, no leaves, and therefore no future opportunities. We can’t go anywhere or take any path without having an education first.
