A Change in Schedule by Julia - April 2021 Scholarship Essay

I think one of society’s biggest flaws is not dedicating enough time to the things we love. The world has become so competitive that our focus mostly revolves around work, success, money, and stability. We get so caught up in materialistic things to ensure that we are satisfied with our lives. At young ages, this mindset is engraved into our brains, destroying the world of innocence and fun we once knew. Society teaches us that this lifestyle is completely normal. What nobody tells us is that we can change it.

Five years ago I was nearing the end of my seventh grade year. I was a very good student, as I am today, and I took school pretty seriously. I was involved in extracurricular activities in and out of school as well. I was young, and I didn’t have any major responsibilities; I would remind myself of this if I could go back in time. I would tell myself, “It gets a lot harder than this, so don’t take this for granted”. But most importantly, I would remind myself to never stop making time for the things I love, even as life gets more difficult.

I love being busy. I live my life through checklists, and my planner is color coated to perfection. I truly enjoy having a packed schedule. However, I can sometimes get overwhelmed to the point that I ignore the positive side. I would have given myself the advice to make time for the things I love, because when life gets hectic, the only thing that can bring me back down to earth is love. The only thing that will relieve my stress is dance, my family, my friends, exercising, and even taking the time to eat my favorite snack while watching my favorite show.

Yes, we need to take life seriously, but not so much as we think. The importance of finding down time is crucial when it comes to being successful. From personal experience, being on the go 24/7 is fun until you look back and realize that you missed out on all the fun opportunities that were thrown at you. Life is truly about the simple things, and if we ignore these, it is hard to find true happiness and peace. Carve out time in your schedule for things that bring you happiness!
