Beauty in Unity by Julia - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

“Unity is strength...when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” -Mattie Stepanek, an American poet and motivational speaker. Within any community or society, collaborativeness is key to establishing a stable foundation. I believe that the same idea applies to college. Without a collegiate experience, the majority of scientists, mathematicians and engineers would have limited exposure to advancements outside of their field. College provides its members with the opportunity to operate as a cohesive team. Without this opportunity, an intellectual community is hindered and challenged with bringing about new innovations. Instead of going on independent research excursions and conducting unconnected labs, academics can use their skills for the greater good of society by aligning. When we are all able to come together as an undivided community, we can make significant changes in society.
One of the reasons why college is worth it is because it is instrumental in creating interconnectedness. Within a college community, we are taught how to make an effort to work by using shared resources. If a group is limited to only its studies, the members’ strengths will be limited. Most college graduates have their own special device or ambitious brainchild that they want to fabricate. I am no different. For instance, I joined a variety of different clubs and organizations, because I wanted to be exposed to different kinds of people from different kinds of backgrounds. As a future college student, my hope is to develop an environmental firm to help launch my global warming solution. Even with a degree in environmental studies, I know that I can not accomplish my goal alone. I will need the intelligence and specialties of my fellow college classmates because there are other components that I wouldn’t be able to develop on my own. Ideally, I will unite with other students so that we can mutually benefit from each other's specializations. Hopefully, our talents would unite to make something greater than what they would develop individually. This is possible within the college community because everyone is seeking a higher education.
All around the world there are intelligent people with brilliant ideas who may not have the education or the resources to execute their solutions and ideas. Once a college student graduates, he or she can give back to their community by sharing what they have learned. Graduates have a chance to educate and mold the intellectuals of the future. College also provides a chance to learn about other cultures and ways of life. It wasn’t until I was selected for the Governor’s Honors Program that I understood the value of socializing with students from outside of my community. The program gave me the chance to be a college student for a month, and experience first hand what that life is like. After that experience, I truly saw how important college was, because I learned academic and life skills I never knew I needed. It was a life-changing experience that I can not wait to explore on a collegiate level.
To me, college is worth the opportunities to gain more knowledge, expand my social circle and develop as a person. All in all, there is beauty in unity. College is essential, because it creates communities and unity that change the world for the better. When college graduates come together in and outside of college, the community benefits because they will bring solutions and innovations that they may not have been able to develop without access to higher education.
