The Chameleon Girl by Julia - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
When I was six, I was convinced I wanted to be a horse.
While everyone else was dancing at my aunt and uncle's wedding reception, I was running around the room, or rather, galloping. In my backyard, I found myself imagining I was a wild horse, running free without a care in the world no matter how strange I probably looked. But, like most interests I had at the age of six, I grew out of that dream, taking on the sophistication and maturity that came with being a third grader. I had discovered an interest in music, and, getting ahead of myself, attempted to start a rock band with some of my classmates. The idea was ambitious, but it unfortunately only lasted a day, as I realized neither I nor anyone in my class knew how to play an instrument at the time.
While my interests and hobbies evolved, I continued to explore my creative side, finding a love for fashion, clothing, and makeup. I remember my sixth grade self as I spent hours scouring through makeup tutorials on YouTube and fashion handbooks, creating my own designs and practicing my design skills. As I continued to grow, I began to realize that I had so many interests in so many different areas. I loved to make art, play music (I had begun to practice the guitar), write, and explore the world around me. How was I supposed to choose one career?
As I grew and took a variety of classes in high school, I began to narrow my interests. I wanted to maintain my creative spirit while honing in on my more practiced skills, such as writing, problem-solving, and generating ideas. After taking a Business and Management class during my Junior year, I realized that I had an interest in Marketing, which is what I am now going to be studying in college. I love being able to express my own ideas and come up with creative solutions while having to think critically about obstacles I am facing.
Through my studies of Marketing and its different components, I can focus my very distinct interests on one career that encompasses them all, allowing me to not only keep my creative side but also challenge myself to think of the best ways to address issues. I may have to choose only one career, but I can bring my knowledge from all of my different experiences and interests to the table, allowing me to be successful in the future.
