Leaders Making an Impact by Joshua - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

What really defines a leader? Leadership can be broken down into three main traits determination, communication, and courage. These three traits are not only things a successful leader needs, but also things that a strategic college student needs. Any college student needs these traits to be succesful, and to make an impact. Leadership starts in college, and these three traits are essential to any college student, as well as any leader. Leaders are people who can really make an impact and as college students preparing to enter our career, it is our job to be leaders and make a difference.

Determinations is essential for any leader as well as any college student. Determination is what pushes us and drives us to achieve what we want. We are all here at college to achieve something great. For me personally, I want to become an educator to help high school students find their passion and do something great with their lives. Getting through college is hard, but determination is what pushes us to obtain our degree and find a career that we love. Any leader needs ambition and determination to always work towards achieving what they want. There really isn’t much of a point to doing something if you don’t have determination to get it done. Leaders need to be determined to keep moving forward constantly.

Another element that makes a successful leader is communication. Being a leader is all about communication to insure that things are getting done and to build friendships and relationships. Communication is the foundation for a leader to be succesful. Being a leader means being able to communicate and get along with others well. Students also need communication skills to be successful. Communication is essential in college. Whether you are in group projects, talking to your professors, or just creating friendships, communication is needed daily in college students lives. Communication skills are something that you learn over time. College helps young adults learn better communication skills, which will be valuable throughout their life.

Lastly a college student, as well as a leader needs to be courageous. One saying that I have always abided by was that being courageous doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid of anything, but rather to have fears but having the courage to overcome them. We all have fears, we all have doubts, but as a leader you need to be able to work past those fears and set an example for others. College students have to be courageous also. I remember moving to college, my dad came with me. The minute he got in the car and drove the 20 hours back home was when I realized I was alone. Being alone is a fear I have always had, but moving to college I overcame that. I made new friends, and I got involved in my campus life, and pretty soon I didn’t feel so alone anymore. Moving to college I had to be courageous to overcome my fear of being alone, and I did. Any college student needs courage to push themselves harder then they think they can, and to do something great. Courage is vital to any leader or college student to be successful.

Determination to push yourself harder than you think you can be pushed, communication to form friendships and relationships, and courage to overcome your fears and set an example for others are all things that any college student needs. These traits are also elements that make up a leader. Leadership is absolutely necessary for any college student to be successful. College is all about taking control of your future to make an impact in the world. Being a leader is necessary for any college student to succeed and make a difference in the world. College students are working towards a degree to get into a career that they love and that they can make a difference in. The only way to make that difference is to be a leader, and leadership starts in college.
