College is a privilege by Joshua - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I don't think going to college is necessary for everyone. People have different talents and dreams. It might be better for some people to jump straight into the field than to go to college. However, many people think that college education is necessary and important, which I agree. There are three reasons why.
First, many students didn't have enough time to learn about whatever favorite studies and work they were aiming for in their life. I think that time in college is a valuable time to take a variety of general education courses and experience various things, and to find out what kind of study they really want. We see many students transfer from the major they thought they loved in high school to another. I don't think that's bad. Rather, I think the process of experiencing, thinking over, and changing majors is valuable and productive in the long run. Students need time and experience to decide what they really like to do for the rest of their life.
Second, I think a college education is important because college is not a place that students go only for studying. We live with a lot of help from parents until high school. If we want to learn something, our parents often pay for it. If we wanted to eat something, our parents buy it for us. If we want to buy something, we would reach out to our parents for their opinion and support. Summer vacation plans are also carried out with the help of parents. After high school, students experience major change in their life: Independence. There are many things that we have to do on our own when we go to college. We are, happily or involuntarily, training ourselves to plan and live on our own, including what to eat, where to live, how to spend time, and how to save money on tuition and living expenses. Before going into society, I think college is a good time to go through a life rehearsal with a little bit of leeway in learning how to do so.
Third, it is time to study our major in detail. Many students will be able to find their favorite study and investigate it more intensively. The precious time to learn and study together with professors who are experts in the field is especially a privilege given only to college students. Even if we bother professors with endless questions that make no sense, that is completely fine in a college setting. We may be even complimented by those stupid questions. What a privilege!
Whether students go to college or not, it's their choice and they will have to decide according to their situation. For some people, college may not be the best option. However, it is no doubt that college is an opportunity to open our eyes and widen our path. That is why we have to study hard to get into college and that is also why financial support is critical, so that finances are not a reason to rule out the college education.
